Steroidal Hormone Balance
“The 11th FHC”

Introduction
The purpose of this article is the momentous addition of the 11th Fundamental Homeostatic
Control (FHC) – Steroidal Hormone Balance (SHB) -- to the HealthExcel System of Metabolic
Typing®. It should be noted that although this introduction is made in January, 2009, and
comes nearly 30 years after the discovery of the first FHC and the origination of our MT
philosophy, the newest FHC jumps to the position of #3 in priority, surpassed only by the
Autonomic and Oxidative FHC’s. That fact alone stands as sufficient testament to its importance
and critical contribution to defining and properly addressing the requirements of metabolic
individuality.
Upon closer evaluation, the SHB FHC is really inexorably linked to the Autonomic FHC since the
term “Autonomic Type” is actually shorthand for “Neuro-Endocrine Type.” The Autonomic Type
encompasses the intimate relationships in both communication and regulation of the
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic divisions of the ANS with the strengths, weaknesses, and
functional efficiencies of their associated endocrine glands and other organs. Together, the
Brain, the Autonomic Nervous System, and the Endocrines regulate all elements of metabolism.
Hierarchical Organization
The body is structured through a hierarchy of organization from the highest, most complex
level to ever simpler levels where the higher levels are protective of the adjacent lower levels
and the lower levels are dependent upon and subordinate to the adjacent higher levels. From
most to least complex, the hierarchical levels are:
Whole Organism => System => Gland/Organ => Tissue => Cell => Nuclear => Sub-Nuclear
Hierarchy as per functional efficiency is manifest within each of the levels, as well. Within the
Endocrine System, the Hypothalamus and the Pituitary (in conjunction with the Brain, of
course) are the “master regulators” upon which all regulatory function of all other elements of
metabolism depend. But next in line in terms of regulatory function and maintenance of
metabolic efficiency are the Adrenal Glands along with their production and regulation of the
Steroidal Hormones -- Pregnenolone, Progesterone, Cortisol, DHEA, Testosterone, and the
Estrogens. So critical to the questions of health vs. disease are the Adrenals and the Steroidal
Hormone Balance that they are involved in regulating virtually every aspect of body function!
The Adrenal Cortex, for example, is responsible for producing over 50 different types of
hormones. Simply put: As goes the health and functional efficiency of the adrenals, so goes the
health and functional efficiency of every aspect of metabolism in the body.
Unfortunately, never in recorded history have the Adrenal Glands been under such duress and
challenge to maintain life in good health as they are today in our modern world. Once the
implications of this fact are understood, it will be easy to see why the rate of degenerative disease is sky-rocketing in our society with cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity at
epidemic levels never before seen … and growing worse all the time. Fortunately, with the
addition of the Steroidal Hormone Balance FHC to our Metabolic Typing® model, we have the
means to reveal both the cause and the solution to this sad state of human health affairs.
