Hi guys,
Asked this on another forum too. Whats your height/weight class and how do you feel its working out for you? Do you feel there's an ideal weight class for a given height to maximize performance or is it a case of eat, train, see what happens?
I'm 5'7 and hover around 175lbs so could go either way. I feel I probably need to be at least 190lbs walking weight to maximize potential but I'll work there slowly (via a quick cut to 165lbs this May to allow me to qualify for the nationals! Haha...the hypocrisy)
Anyway, whats your take on it?

Good topic Mark.
I think that as a VERY broad generalisation, shorter, thicker/stockier guys make the best lifters, at least on sq/bench. The shorter you are, the less far you have to squat the bar, and the thicker you are the less far you have to press it on bench right?
One of my training partners Clive, was 2007/8 IPF world champ at 125kg and the geezer is maybe 5'4.
Andrey Belayev is 5'6 ish at 100kg. I doubt Malanchiev is much over 5'8 at 125+. Wade Hoop must be 5'5 ish at a really thick 82kg, Ed Coan is only a few inches taller at 100kg - the list goes on.
Some taller leaner guys do well on DL though, look at Brad Gilliam or Bondarenko.
Personally I'm 5'6 85kg and lift at 82, but I feel I can carry more muscle at this height and would probably be better at 90kg if only I could build the bloody stuff.

I'm 6'2" and looking at the decent taller lifters in the IPF, I obviously need to be SHW. I'm ~270lb now, so I think I have another 38lb or so to go until I get to my ideal weight. I'm way too tall to be a decent 125 I think.

Im 6'1 and currently competing at 90kg...probably looking at going up to 110kg eventually though. Like Ben said, I just need to build more muscle!!!

you are all too light! I'm 5'9 and 124kg- in 2007 I lifted at the IPF worlds as a 110- I was one of the tallest of 20 or lifters. I decided then it was time to be bigger. I caught up with some of the Russians for a drink after I lifted- they were all short and stocky- with the exception of Bondarenko- who was simply huge.

It is an interesting question- I think in the long run- a key is your fitness and well being. For raw lifting, there is less advantage to be gained from 'sloppy' weight- but I am fairly sure that some 'padding' actually improves the performance of a tight bench shirt. I think lean muscle and blubber perform differently under a tight poly.

Do any of you guys find it hard to gain size doing sheiko. I have been trying myself to add some muscle mass, I am 5-9" but hover around 208 I know I need to get between 225-230 to be a true 220 competitive. I started eating alot more but did not notice any muscle gain mostly fat.

I know that sounds right daft considering im saying i find it hard building muscle but im in bigger better shape now then I was before id ever seen a Sheiko program. I gained a few kg this year doing Sheiko only which isnt spectacular but not too bad for a tested powerlifter as opposed to BB'er. I do 4x8 on my SPP movements instead of 5x5 which i think helps.

In all seriousness- yeah- Sheiko has changed my body composition- that's for sure. Its also helped me understand health, wellbeing and general athleticism are important to powerlifting success. General fitness, flexibilty and nutrition are such a big part of the picture in my opinion- so I no longer subscribe to the 'eat junk- get fat- lift more' philosophy. Eat stacks, but eat good- cover your bases- look at the big picture. The rest should follow. When I started sheiko last August I was 124kg. I'm now just a little lighter- but my waist is smaller, my chest and thighs bigger and I'm fitter and feel more balanced.
