I was recently at a PL contest and I overheard a group of guys talking about just Benchers, saying that they didnt consider them real lifters. I had to about bite my tongue off,to keep quiet Now this hit home with me,cause both my knees are blown out,but I still work them very hard with Deads and Squats, cause I push off on them,so I ask all full power and just Benchers, just because I dont compete in full power, why does that not make me a lifter. I guess I can even add just the ones who squat or just Dead, does it also pertain to you too, just the ones that only compete in a single lift, maybe you have injuries or maybe you are just better at one lift than the other. Give me your thougths on it.

Bench press specialist are competitors that only compete in bench press competitions only. So, yes they are lifters. Now, they are not powerlifters because it requires you to compete in the combined squat , bench press and deadlift for a total.
Usually, when a person says that a bencher isn't a lifter. He is jealous that a bencher can out bench press him!
I'm a bench press specialist and get a lot of negative comments that I'm not a lifter. The negative comments come from other lifters that can't touch me with a ten foot pole!

If bencher's are not lifters. Why is it the first question asked. How much can (he)(she) bench. Tell those at the gym its not a lift. J.T. Hall is correct. The ones at the gym that say. Oh, I'm not interested in the bench. Its because my wife can out lift them! And in reality. Who cares what a couple of want to be will never be lifters say. Stay focused and keep the course.

I think it takes much more pressure and desire to do full meets but that being said.......Bench is King. Yes, Bench pressers are real lifters.

I think it takes much more pressure and desire to do full meets but that being said.......Bench is King. Yes, Bench pressers are real lifters. Pressure. Maybe. Desire? I totally disagree. Desire is measured by the individual, not by what he competes in. Does a quarterback have less desire than a receiver/kick returner? Remember. We have to do squats and dead lifts in out routine, just like full power lifters. We just try to stay away from the strong dead lifts, for one good reason. Compare the full power lifters bench to a bench only. 9 out of 10 times, the bench only will throw a lashing on the full power. Just like a full power will humiliate most bench only, when it comes to the dead lift. I think no less of a lifter because he lifts less than me in any lift. He is out there lifting and competing. Thats all there is to it. If a full power benches, is that considered a lift? So if a bencher benches. Is that not a lift? There for, bencher's are lifters. Full power lifters are full power lifters. See now its broken down to fit our special little word for all special little things world. One thing I wish we would stop doing. Using the word specialist. I think it categorizes the so called with the actuals. I'm not a bench specialist. I'm a Bench Master. Not just by age. I don't just specialize in the bench. I have Mastered it!
