Well, I hope I'm not cluttering up the board too much already... I'm curious though. I'm interested in experimenting with sumo-style deadlifts, but I can't figure out how I'd be able to incorporate them into a template such as #37. Most days tend to consist of two partial movements, or a partial followed by a full. So it seems that this wouldn't lend itself to training both styles in one day.
Is there a sensible way to train both, or would I just have to bite the bullet and go sumo for a whole cycle?

I would recommend doing all the full ROM pulls sumo and the pulls off blocks conventional anyway for a sumo puller so you could try that.
I think that would make you sumo go up more than owt else anyway.
But it might make your conventional go down a bit...definately you need to do at least a 12wk cycle to see if you prefer sumo.

I wouldnt see a problem if you did the opposite style from the one youre best at like once every 4 weeks on your max effort day. It might even make your stronger style of deadlift go up. I think its good to do both styles. Plus you need some variation of deadlift to keep it fresh and keep making gains.

Thank you both for your input.
beburgess - My deadlifts have been feeling 'off' since I started Sheiko. While I would prefer not to completely drop conventional, maybe a few months of sumo would be beneficial.
mikek - I would definitely welcome the variation, but I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'max effort day.'

No i didnt get that either. Training sumo will not help your conventional i can tell you that from experience. It can work the other way round though.

I agree with Ben here, sumo had not helped my conventional. I'm starting number 30 today, wish me luck haha.

Well, just to give a bit of an update... My low back has been feeling pretty sore for the past couple of weeks, so I bit the bullet and decided to pull sumo on a whim today. It actually felt pretty good, except the very top of the lockout felt a bit strange, like I couldn't quite finish pulling my shoulders back. Anyway, I only have one more week of training before starting 32, so it's probably silly for me to switch at this point. We'll see if it comes back to haunt me in a few weeks.

A little off topic, but back in 2007 I spoke to a couple of the Russian worlds team, they said they all pull sumo because conventional is too taxing for the way they train. They said heavy squatting with sumo ok, but conventional is not compatible with frequent heavy squatting.

I dunno I think Im gonna have to stick with pulling conventional though when I do meets. I am quite a bit weaker on sumo deads.

spsfw - that's not off topic at all; quite interesting, actually. My back feels pretty burnt out after two months of Sheiko with conventional pulls, and I think the switch will do some good. Also, it seems like the partial movements lend themselves more to sumo. Maybe it's the technical aspect.
