Everyone has them, in my view it's just a matter of being able to limit them and get through them. I haven't had a poor session for some time but ran into one today. Combination of a number of factors (long work hours, had a cold for a few weeks, sleeping poorly) and bang, my squatting went to shit (ie couldn't get the numbers I was meant to get 4 x 3 at 80%, so had to reduce them). The squat is my worst lift so when I have a poor session with bench or deadlift, I get through them but with squat, it goes bad (annoying as I'm 12wks into a 16wk program). Anyhow, got through it (80% bench was fine) and think I'll take a 3-4 day break. Will have to forget it and smash the squat later in the week.

Last four weeks of your reduced volume. This has followed 37/37/Condition Week with the plan to do 32 in two weeks time. So it's really 17wks.

Hate to rub it in but ive never missed a lift on a prep cycle, definately not at 80%...
Are you using accurate maxes?

Actual maxes for first 13wks, increased slightly for this block (ie works out to be around 5kg on each lift). Theory behind this was I'd done 37 twice on actual maxes and lifts were getting easy. 4 x 2 at 80% squat last week was a walk in the park. Going to keep bench/dead at increased amount though will strip squat of 5kg. Don't think this was core of the problem though a mitigating factor (though you never know).

Training parter and I have never missed a prep lift either. Sounds odd as really you should be able to triple 80% any day of the week.

As you say we all have bad training sessions, i think you will find its in your head more than your muscles. I struggled the first week back to 80ish % squats the week after my meet. I completed them but sets 1,2,3 were a battle to say the least. Then for the final set i said to myself yes last set, last set and i smashed it like they were nothing! That proves it was my mindset not my strength that was holding me back. Not having a go but u list all the reasons so maybe you went into the gym having already decided subconciously that you would fail. Talk youself into the lifts, if its 80% then you know you are capable! Keep positive mate...

Fair point.

A epilogue (right word?) for those interested. Haven't changed the squat max and lifting has been fine. What has changed is the long work hours/illness/sleeping combo which I feel didn't help me much (plus some HTFU).
