I'm glad they re-emphasised the importance of vitamin D levels. Low levels of this nutrient is being implicated in more and more diseases. Its a nutrient that you cant get much dietwise, even if you just ate offal and eggs all day, and our ancestors would have gotten optimal levels of it through being outdoor all day as the sunlight makes your skin synthesize it in large quantities. Seeing as most people arent outdoors all day, supplementation is the only way to adequate levels.

This is something I should look into - I don't get much sun at all, even in summer.

I think if you are going to use a supplement, a D3 in natural fish liver oil is good because it makes it more bioavailable. A hard training athlete needs about 5000 IU a day, probably more if you dont see alot of sun. You could use cod liver oil but the vitamin A content is often too high compared to the vitamin D. The Ultra Life Inc vitamin D capsules are good because they are in natural fish liver oil, but the dose is too low (only 400IU). Solgar do an excellent natural fish liver oil -based Vitamin D3 that is a much better 1000IU per capsule, and its quite cheap as well.

As with ANYTHING, start low and slowly build up; all the while monitoring your DCR's. Some may need 5000 IU's a day, and some may not. I have seen it vary dramatically.
