I was wondering, have the guys who come up with the HealthExcel supplementation protocols ever thought about adding Rhodiola Rosea to their arsenal? Its a very effective European-derived adaptogen for controlling cortisol and other HPA axis related conditions. It has been shown to regulate the nervous system, improve depression (it improves synthesis of opoid neurotransmitters in the brain), enhance work performance, improve sleep, eliminate fatigue, and prevent certain types of sickness such as altitude sickness by modulating oxygen uptake and utilisation in the blood. Its every bit as effective as other adaptogens that HealthExcel use like ginseng, fo-ti and schizandra, and then some. You guys should check it out.
Before starting my MT program, i just started doing a full Sheiko powerlifting training program. To start with it was killing me, but i started taking a high potency Rhodiola Rosea supplement (standardised to about 5% rosavins), and the effect was pretty dramatic. I didnt feel half as beat up, and was 90%+ fresh for every training session, even when it got really tough. I kind of abused it a bit though and took it for about 15 weeks straight at a high dose. When i stopped, i burnt out pretty quick. I have done the same thing with other adaptogens like ginseng in the past.

Rob:
I have passed your information along. I have used rhodiola rosea before; but it has probably been 2+ years ago. I used it to help with my nervous system, and I will need to pull my notes out to see what I concluded.
If you don't find that it interferes with anything else you are doing in terms of your DCR's, then you very well may have stumbled upon something that really works for your body chemistry.
Does anyone else have any input on rhodiola rosea?
Rob-do you have anything to add? Have any of your mates used it?
Eric

Eric, yes a few of the guys in the gym have used it during Intensification cycles in their training (i.e maximum volume with moderate intensity) with good effects, in that they have not gotten so beaten up or burnt out.
On one of the other forums i attend a few guys on there i trust love this stuff and use it all the time, cycling it at high dose 3 weeks on 1 week off. They claim it helps with everything from keeping fresh with high intensity training, to improving performance in the bedroom!

Rob:
Can you share some specifics with us in terms of product brand name, doses, when you took it, and everything that you felt it did-both positive and negative?
Did you take it on its own, or was it combined with something else?
Does anyone else have anything to offer on rhodiola rosea? If so then please post it!
Thanks!
Eric

The brand i used was the myprotein.co.uk rhodiola rosea capsules www.myprotein.co.uk/capsules-tablets-softgels/health-and-well-being/rhodiola-rosea/. I was taking 2 in the morning. The only negative i can think of was the same as any other adaptogen - in that, when you come off of it, you notice a bit of a drop in energy and performance. The only other things iwas using at the time was a multivitamin, vitamin C, and acetyl-l-carnitine. Al lthings i had been using long before i tried RR.

Thanks for this, Rob. Perhaps I will play around with it when Raw Unity season draws closer.
Right now I am really working with Bill on my neurotransmitters; experimenting with proper doses of l-tyrosine and l-tryptophan. Once I get them exactly where I feel optimal I will perhaps move on to the rhodiola.
Keep us posted on it, please.

OK Eric. I'm not using it at the moment as i dont want to complicate things with the adrenal recovery supplements you've got me on.
