Hi all,
After any advice I can get on this. I'm completely new to suits, had a couple of goes before but only started trying to train in it properly yesterday. Anyway, background info, I'm around 80k, raw squat max is 175k. Yesterday I got it the suit (Centrurion NGX+) and started trying to work in it to get to depth. Got up to 180k and still couldn't make it with 2 reps, pushing down with all my might and even took out blood vessells in my face from the pressure but wasn't getting there. Anyway, then something strange happened, loaded up 185k, 1st rep same story, 2nd rep I was told by the spotter I just about got to parallel, problem is as I got there it was like I had ZERO strength/support and couldn't even hold the weight up so the spotter had to catch me....this was quite a nasty feeling but I figured maybe I just lost balance. Dropped it back to 180k and repeated, exactly the same thing happened again, right around parallel everything just went and I had nothing.
Any advice on this? I'm assuming its because either I don't know how to use the suit or because my body just had enough of this sort of thing but I don't really know. Its a very uncomfortable situation to find yourself in either way!

My guess is you sapped your energy by having to strain so hard to get to depth. Go down until it is no longer comfortable or you feel you are getting stuck and then come up. You will likely find over the course of the next few weeks you are able to go deeper and deeper. Just be patient and don't force depth.

Its hard to say without seeing the squats. The suit will push your groove around, so it may be that the suit is must moving you into a weak position. The same cues you use for raw should work, except you'll have more hip support so you can sit back more and widen your stance. Can you get a video up?

One mistake people make when using suits for the first time is not getting the leg holes far enough up their thighs near their groin. You really have to spend time pulling your legs as far through the leg holes in the suit as much as possible, so it snugly fits right up near your groin. Otherwise you wont be able to open your legs / push your knees out when you squat, and you wont get much support in your hips. I'm lucky that i had some decent lifters show me how to put on a suit properly. You can get videos on YouTube.

Straps up, no wraps, belt on. Haven't got any vids as I don't have a camera but I'm endevouring to sort this out.
Rob, this makes sense actually, I couldn't really get it on at first so I took a few reps to push it on etc. I was having a nightmare trying to push my knees out, didn't feel any tightness on the hips only the legs.... do you get the suit all the way on/seated before taking any squats?

Yes, you must get the suit bottoms all the way on (i.e all the way up your thighs and close to the groin) before you start your first set, otherwise it will pull your legs together half way down your thighs as you squat, buckling your knees. My procedure is:
1) Put suit slippers on your legs (you can be a cheapskate and use bin bags with holes in them)
2) turn the suit inside out, and pull each leg through the leg holes in the suit, getting it as high up the thigh as possible
3) Roll the suit up over your ass and torso so its no longer inside out
4) Get your straps up, and then do a series of bodyweight squats, pushing your knees out hard with each attempt. The straps up and knees out combo should pull the leg holes even further up your thighs.

You arnt going to get depth the 1st time out in a brand new tight suit wth the straps up with 180 it aint never gonna happen. If you can sq 175 raw, you wanna be taking reps with the straps down at 180. Get comfortable with this 1st. It is a different groove in the suit, so with straps down concentrate on sitting back and pushing your knees out while keeping chest up. 180 triples straps down (with wraps if you want) should be fine for this. Vids will show, but my guesstimate is that when you had straps up you were trying to force the depth and the suit rounded you over and you ended up in a crappy ugly position which is why you felt weak.

Yeah, sorry i should of said that once you have got the suit bottoms up as high as possible, and the suit is on to the best of your ability, you need to take the straps back down again when you squat. You only need to work with the straps up once you are used to using the suit properly with much larger weights. So, what Ben said

The key is time really...
Watch vids of good squatters, similar builds to you if poss. See how they do it. Then practice for ages. I think i am just now starting to really nail my suited sq technique and I got my 1st suit in 2006.

Ben, what do you think of using suit slippers for assisting getting the suit on? Personally, i feel it was a good investment - it made getting the suit on by myself much easier. Apparently you can put them on your arms and use them for getting your bench shirt on as well.
