I'm planning on doing the Exemplary 6 Novice program and am wondering what weights I should be starting with for the main lifts? I haven't touched a weight for 18 months, and my past training wasn't really strength orientated, so I don't think aiming for 2% gains from the other programs is an efficient way to go.
Any suggestions???

Hi Jkolo, just use your current 1 rep max's. Don't guess what they may be. Trian hard.

Kiwi, the novice program isn't based on percentages.
jkolo, I would just go by "feel". You shouldn't be coming close to failing I don't think.
Another option is Dave's reduced volume 13 weeker. You could test your maxes and do that.

You could test your maxes and do that. Sorry Joel my mistake, I thought all training programs (LP,Suslov,Sheiko,Westside etc,etc) are based on some type of max.

Kiwi, Boris talks in his book about novices, namely training groups of youths. He basically says it's because they will over-estimate their maxes and try to raise the weight each session, which can lead to injury.
He says that the most important thing is the number of repitions, rather than the weight on the bar.
