yeah- they are rack dls- or you can do them the way joel does and pull with the plates sitting on matts or blocks. Basically its a deadlift partial. I'll let someone else take the question about conventional. My guess is that its ok, but ideally you'd pull in the same stance you do in competition.

How many reds did you get for the squats you missed? They look pretty good to me. Here is the squats vid:

I guess my hands aren't as strong as I thought then. I'll have to work on that.

The fusion is great, but its painful in all the wrong places. The metal is just easier for me to get to the bar and set up.

I had a meet yesterday. It didn't go exactly to plan, but I guess thats powerlifting. I was 130.5kg bodyweight two weeks out, so I tightened up my metabolic typing diet and managed to get down to 126 a day out. I dropped the rest in the sauna. Weighed in 124.6. I don't seem to take the sauna well and I felt sick. Squats all seemed good, but the opener felt a little wobbly so I was conservative with attempts. I got all 3 squats and 3 whites for all, so I am happy with that- as depth has been a focus for this training cycle. With bench I guess the weight lose took it s toll and the guys helping me put the shirt on weird- it felt all wrong- the sleeves were pulled way up so the cuffs were a good 3-4 inches from my elbow all bunched up. In training it took 250kg to touch. I touched 200 in the warm ups easy. I hit the opener, but missed the next two. With deadlift, I pull hook grip. The bar we had was old and the meet director had cleaned the rust off my sending it to a metal cleaning place who put it in an acid bath. Result- no knurling. Pulled first two lifts then passed on my third, as the grip was struggling. Attempts were as follows: SQ 350kg 3 whites 360kg 3 whites 365kg 3 whites B 245kg 3 whites 260kg 3 reds 260kg 3 reds DL 265kg 3 whites 280kg 3 whites passed on third
Here is a vid of my 3 best for the day:
Despite the less than perfect day I am pretty happy with where I ended up. My strength was good and I think I have sorted out my technical issues with squat. I am confident I can put it all together on the platform soon. For those that don't know me, I started working on Sheiko with Dave in August last year. I had just been through surgery to repair a tore bicep and had a forced 16 week break from any training. I few said I would never lift again, plenty said I would never deadlift. My best lifts prior to the injury- after many years of hard training as well- were SQ 312.5kg, B 252.5kg DL 300kg. So, Dave took be on when I was just back in the gym, learning hook grip and ben ching 70kg and deadlifting 70kg- making a comeback. Here we are 15-16months later and I have moved my competition squat to 365kg, my bench to 270kg and I have my deadlift basically where it was prior to injury. I could never ever imagine making such progress. I am no beginner and prior to Sheiko I trained with experienced lifters and trained hard. Training under Dave has made me rethink my ideas of what is possible. 2 years ago I would never have thought I could squat 365kg. No I have done it with gas in the tank. Can I squat 400kg? I think I probably can with Dave's help. Can I bench 280kg? I think I will in the next 6 months. Can I deadlift more than I did before my injury? Of course. Thanks Dave, you probably have no idea how much you do for us lifters, but I certainly appreciate all your help. I have qualified for the world IPF bench in Texas, so I better get my bench sorted out pronto! I'll go raw sq from here and try sumo while I shift the focus to benching.

A little off topic, but back in 2007 I spoke to a couple of the Russian worlds team, they said they all pull sumo because conventional is too taxing for the way they train. They said heavy squatting with sumo ok, but conventional is not compatible with frequent heavy squatting.

Hey- I did my skills evaluation last night. I have a bad cold, so I was close to skipping the session, but went in and did it anyway. I only got videos of my squats and bench. For some reason I did 2 reps with 90% on bench. I blame the cold.

Hey Vicki,
If you don't have any comps in the near future after your Nov one I would recommend running through a simple template raw with estimated numbers- or going in a week after your comp and testing your raw numbers. If you get the chance feel free to drop by Apollo and work in for a session, fire questions at us etc. I personally don't get to touch weights till I get to 90%, so I just do the best I can with whatever weight I am using.

thanks Ben, my problem is that once my pants have been pulled down I need to learn to go a little further so that they stay on for the next attempts.

yeah- seems to work great. I was good for PRs, I just couldn't hit depth in the squat. Bench was up 16lb!

this nerve damage you speak of- I think thats what you are aiming for. For me I welcomed the point where I started to lose feeling in my thumbs. Loss of feeling sure beats pain. I have lost some feeling in my thumbs from the middle joint to the tip. Its temporary. Trust me, if you take a few weeks off training the feeling comes back and you'll feel it again when you hook grip.

I still think there is something to the approach the Russian lifters explained to me, which was basically that sumo works better for Sheiko because it compliments the squat better and is less taxing. I think if you can get sumo working for you it makes sense to lift sumo. My problem is getting it to work for me!

I lift with hook grip and have done so for just over a year. Here is what I do: choose 1 of the deadlift movements for hook grip and do the other with straps- so if I have rack pulls and pulls to the knee, I will do the pulls to knee with straps and save the thumbs for rack pull; if its pulls to the knees and full deadlifts- I'll save the thumbs for the full deadlifts. Reps kill your thumbs more than weight does- so if you have multiple sets at the top weight just get through as many as you can then switch to straps when it gets too much. Don't feel bad about this- I emailed Brad Gillingham (who has pulled 400kg with hookgrip) and this is pretty much the advice he gave me. I think hookgrip is definitely worth doing- it hurts when you start off, but the pain does go. I believe 99% of people who start this and then abandon it do so because they can't take the pain at the start. If you can work through that you'll be fine.
